Get Ready for the January KAL!

As you frantically knit late into the evening in order to finish all of your holiday gifts, it's hard to look ahead to next month.  But look ahead we must!  So what will you be knitting in January?  How about knitting a pair of socks in Michelle Hunter's next Progressive Needles Knit Along!

What will they look like?
The unique sock pattern is knit two-at-a-time on a long set of circulars using the "Magic Loop" method. The socks are for either men or women, and feature techniques new to Michelle's KAL series.  The pattern is for novice and experienced sock knitters alike.

So what will the socks look like?  We don't know!  That's the fun part of a "mystery" knit-a-long.  Michelle assures us that these socks will have us looking at our stitches in a whole new way!

CoBaSi in Iris Blue
The socks are knit in CoBaSi by HiKoo. It's a cotton, bamboo, and silk blend (get it?  CottonBambooSilk?) that also has a generous amount of elastic. If you have been looking for a wool-free sock yarn, look no further! This soft yarn will not irritate or overheat, it is machine washable, and you can choose from over 25 colors.  Bonus: We have CoBaSi on sale at 20% off!

Never done a KAL?  It's easy ... Michelle will reveal the pattern on her website in four segments, every Thursday in January starting on January 2nd.  Have a question?  No problem ... Michelle posts photos and online video instructions.  It's like having a knitting tutor right by your side.  How much does it cost?  Nothing!  You don't have to register or pay any fee to participate. You may even win some cool prizes from Skacel.

You will need:
  • One size US #1 / 2.5mm 40" circular needle.  As always, adjust the needle size if necessary to achieve a gauge of 8.5 stitches per inch.
Michelle used the new addi Sock Rockets, which are temporarily back ordered.  Yikes!  We will most likely get them back in stock before the January KAL begins.  You can Pre-order your set today and they will be shipped to you as soon as we receive them.  Or, you can substitute addi's other 40" circular needles, the classic addi Turbos or the delightfully pointy addi Turbo Lace.  Give us a call if you have any questions on your needle selection!

The Building in Color Blanket
Is one pair of socks not enough to keep you busy in January?  Are you ready to build your colorwork skills?  Michelle Hunter's NEW book Building in Color is expertly designed to introduce the novice to essential colorwork knitting techniques one skill at a time - all while knitting a beautiful sampler blanket.  The book contains ten different colorwork techniques that you knit separately then seam together to create a colorful blanket.

The featured blanket requires seven skeins of three different colors of HiKoo's Simplicity yarn (for a total of 21 skeins).  Michelle recommends using a dark, medium, and light color for the best effect. She used the colors Natural, Ghost Chili, and Chocolate Milk to create her awesome sample.  Simplicity yarn is buttery soft, machine washable, and available in a huge selection of colors ... perfect for a blanket and perfect for colorwork!  Bonus: the yarn is 20% off!

You can pre-order the Building in Color book today and we'll ship it to you as soon as it arrives in early January or pick out your yarn with the book and we'll send you everything when the book arrives!

Great Gifts for Great Knitters Like YOU!

Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, 1918
You're a good person.  You lovingly knit hand-made gifts for family and friends.  You brush your teeth twice daily.  You recycle.  You're kind to all of the furry little woodland creatures.  You're on Santa's "Nice" List!

To make it easy for Santa, here are some not-so-subtle hints!
Alpine Forest Pattern Booklet
  • The Alpine Forest (Fall 2013) Classic Elite Pattern Booklet is a collection of eight fun accessories all knit in Fresco yarn.  Include two skeins of Fresco yarn and the delighted recipient can start knitting right away!
  • Wouldn't it be great to try the addi Click needles before you buy the whole set?  Well, now you can.  The FiberWild! addi Click Starter Kit includes Turbo, Natura (bamboo), Turbo Lace and Turbo Long Lace tips.  Decide which tips you like best, and then use the included Click Rewards card to get $25 off when you purchase your set.  (Need a bigger hint?  Print a few copies of this and leave them laying around the house).
  • addi Turbo Rockets combine the extra-pointy tips of the addi Lace Tips and the shiny nickel coating of the classic addi Turbo needles.  The 24" cable is great for knitting in pairs, and the 32" and 40" cables are perfect for the Magic Loop method.
  • Jane Austen Knits
  • What about history lovers, bookworms, and history lovers who are bookworms?  Jane Austen Knits 2013 and the Unofficial Downton Abbey Knits will delight those with a historical bent, and the Unofficial Harry Potter Knits is essential for muggles who knit.  All have have inspired patterns, historical information, feature articles and interviews.
  • Chelsea's Shawl Kit is a double gift - a beautiful shawl for a beautiful cause.  Chelsea's Light Foundation was created in memory of Chelsea King, the fatal victim of a sex offender.  The gorgeous shawl features Chelsea's three favorite colors: sunflower yellow, tangerine orange and sky blue. It is knit with Dream in Color's Smooshy yarn, a 100% Superwash merino wool.  $10 from the purchase of every kit will be donated to Chelsea's Light Foundation, which has been instrumental in passing stricter sentencing laws for sex offenders and providing peer mentoring programs and scholarships for young adults.

Better Late Than Never! Exclusive Color - Country Fair!

Country Fair in 4/8's Wool
Things have been a little crazy around here so it's a little late, but still an awesome color!

Did you go to a fair this fall? Each county has their official county fair where livestock and produce are judged to qualify for the State Fair in Springfield.  In addition to the county fair, many small towns have their own street fairs, organizations and civic clubs host fall festivals, and farmers markets are abound with fall treats.

And what wonderful colors the fall festivals and country fairs have!  The orange pumpkins, golden yellow corn, green of the freshly sprouted winter wheat, crisp red apples and delicious brown hot apple cider and caramel apples.  Our friends at Mountain Colors Yarns appreciate the colors of autumn as much as we do, so they stopped kicking through the fallen leaves long enough to work with us to create a new exclusive FiberWild! color - Country Fair.

The new color is available in three yarns:
  • Alpaca Blend is a warm and soft medium weight blend of alpaca and wool perfect for sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens - or almost anything!  For an easy-peasy project that you can finish in time for Christmas, try the Braid Back Wristlet pattern.
  • 4/8's Wool is a great all-purpose worsted weight yarn in 100% wool.  Make an ordinary project stand out!  There is still time to knit a Winter Headband - keep your ears warm without getting hat-head!
  • Weavers Wool Quarters is a soft 100% wool in a sport weight with an impressive 350 yards per skein.  It is perfect for sweaters, mittens and cowls.  Challenge yourself to knit a pair of socks before the holidays - the Bankers Socks looks great in autumn colors!
Country Fair Slouchy Hat
Enjoy a FREE pattern with the purchase of a 4/8's Wool skein of yarn in Country Fair.  The Country Fair Slouchy Hat is, well, slouchy.  Knit with 4/8's Wool yarn, it's a fun, casual hat to wear while running through a corn maze, browsing the farmer's market or warming your hands with a cup of hot apple cider.

Want more free stuff?  Simply like our Facebook page and comment on our Facebook post about Country Fair here telling us what you love/miss most about fall. We'll pick two people to win one FREE skein of 4/8's Wool in Country Fair, along with a copy of the Country Fair Slouchy Hat pattern! The giveaway end this Friday, December 6th, so don't delay!

Five Days of Free Shipping "Thanks" to the Mayflower!

"Mayflower in Plymouth Harbor" by William Halsall (1882)
The Mayflower was quite a ship!  Every school child learns that she transported the first colonists to America to start the Plymouth Colony. Those same colonists later celebrated the first successful harvest with the first American Thanksgiving.  Most of us did not learn that before her famous voyage she dabbled in fiber and wine!  Before her trans-Atlantic crossing she was used to sail cross-Channel trading English woolens for French wine.

While we can't trade wool for wine (we would like to, but it's probably illegal), we can offer Free Shipping in honor of the Mayflower's famous voyage and the first American Thanksgiving!

From Thanksgiving Day (November 28) through Cyber Monday (December 2) any order, to any location in the U.S. and Canada, qualifies for free shipping.  Yup, that's including the weekend, so you get five glorious days of free shipping

No special code or coupon is required.  Just fill your online shopping cart, checkout, and your shipping charge will show as $0.00.  Can't get any easier!

Loose the crowds, skip the hassle, and shop from home while wearing your pj's and sipping a hot cup of coco.  Check out our Holiday Central page for some great shopping ideas.

Enjoy your holiday - and Happy Knitting!     Amy

Road Trip Season!

Over the river and through the woods … let someone else drive so you can knit! Taking a road-trip this Thanksgiving? … a perfect time to tackle one last quick knit gift for the holidays. Our Holiday Central section has tons of great ideas for quick knit gift giving (say that three time fast!).

These are some of my favorite quick knits for knitting in the car:
  • The
    The Jake Hat
Jake Hat is mostly stockinette stitch, with some color changes to keep it interesting - a great project to knit in the car!  The Jake Hat is knit with Classic Elite's Woodland yarn - a blend of wool and nettles.  You may see stinging nettle plants along the roadside during the summer - I have lots of it in my yard!  The fiber is environmentally friendly, breathable and light, and was spun by Native American for many centuries.  Don't worry, the hat won't sting!
The Lace Edged Hand Towel
The Adrienne Scarf
  • An openwork lace pattern, the Adrienne Scarf is a quick, one ball project.  The glamorous Stacy Charles' Crystal is a dramatic lace weight yarn full of shimmer and sprinkled with sequins.  Warning: This scarf is not for boring wallflowers!  You're going to be noticed wearing this one!

Knit, Swirl Kits - 20% Off!

Coat of Many Colors in Mountain Goat
“Knit, Swirl!” by Sandra McIver is a remarkable book that contains 18 patterns for swirl jackets - a one-piece, one-seam garment is designed to whirl around the body with a drape that flatters women of all shapes.  The basic concept is a series of concentric rings that create the collar, lapels, front and lower back, with one seam that runs from cuff to cuff to create the arms, front bodice and back neck.  Sound complicated? It’s not! Most of the designs require only basic knitting skills, and the first couple of chapters are chock full of tips and tricks that will ease your journey.

If you haven't tried a Swirl Coat yet then now is the time - All of our Swirl kits are 20% Off! ...  and you get FREE shipping for the kit!

The hardest part is deciding which Knit, Swirl Kit to make first!

Nine Colorways
The Coat of Many (or just One!) Color:  Choose a range of your favorite colors and enjoy working them together in an ever-changing waves of color and intensity - or go for the Coat of One Color and enjoy the subtle change from one welt to the next.  The coat on the book's cover is the Coat of Many Colors pattern in the "poppy" (red) colorway in Mountain Goat yarn. This flattering coat has become a classic!  We have three options for you:
Plum Perfect in Mountain Goat
Plum Perfect:  The plum color takes center stage, until you notice the jewel toned bands tucked within the folds of this velvety soft jacket.  The Plum Perfect pattern was a favorite - until the yarn was discontinued.  We have worked with Sandra McIver to redesign the Plum Perfect jacket in two Mountain Colors yarn combinations.  And it doesn't have to be "plum" to be Plum Perfect - there are four colorways to choose from!
Plum Perfect in Alpaca Blend & Twizzle
Click here for more Plum Perfect pictures!

Don't have the book yet? We've got plenty of Sandra McIver's Knit, Swirl! books in stock and it's also on sale at 20% off!

Don't forget to order now while all of our Swirl kits are 20% off, plus you'll get FREE shipping!

New addi Click Starter Kit - Plus $25 in Click Rewards!

So many addi Click Interchangeable sets to choose from . . . how do you decide which set is best for you?  Wouldn't it be great to try them all?  Well, now you can!

We have teamed up with our friends at Skacel to create the Exclusive FiberWild! addi Click Starter Kit.  It's got all of the great features of the original addi Starter Kit - plus more - at the same price!

addi Click Starter Kit
The original addi Click Starter Kit includes:
  • 1 pair of addi Click Turbo tips - size US 7 / 4.50 mm
  • 1 pair of addi Click Natura (bamboo) tips - size US 8 / 5.00 mm
  • 1 pair of addi Click Turbo Lace tips - size US 6 / 4.00 mm
  • 1 24" addi Click cord
  • 1 cable connector
The new FiberWild! addi Click Starter Kit includes all of the above plus:
  • 1 pair of addi Click Turbo Long Lace tips - size US 5 / 3.75 mm
  • 1 32" SOS lifeline cord
  • Quality packaging in various colors
  • A $25.00 Click Rewards Card
The FiberWild! addi Click Starter Kit, including all of the cool extras, is still just $49.95, the same price as the original!

A Click Rewards Card is like Free Money!
What is a Click Rewards Card?  Your Click Rewards card is worth $25.00 off any complete addi Click Set. Choose from the addi Click Turbo (Basic), Lace, Long Lace or the Natura (Bamboo) Sets.  (The Click Rewards card expires on January 31, 2014 - so don't lollygag!)

What is an SOS Lifeline Cord?  If you need to pull out stitches, a lifeline prevents you from pulling out too many stitches - you can pull as far as the lifeline but no further.  There are a number of different ways to insert a lifeline (See Michelle Hunter's video lesson on inserting lifelines).  One way is to tape the waste yarn to your needle and then drag it along as you knit.  A good concept, but the reality is that the tape snags your yarn and slows you down.  The SOS Lifeline Cord is a cable with a slit in it to hold your waste yarn as you drag it along - no need to tape it!  The SOS Lifeline Cord is so easy to use that if you are particularly paranoid on a complicated pattern you can insert a lifeline in every row!

Want it for FREE?  We are celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas with 12 free FiberWild! Exclusive addi Click Starter Kits!  Enter your name and e-mail address (scroll down to the bottom of the Starter Kit page to enter), and every day from December 1st through December 12th we will pick a winner to receive the FiberWild! Exclusive addi Click Starter Kit for free!

Start your test drive of the addi Click needles!  And Happy Knitting!

Knit A Caribou Critter - The Perfect Gift!

Touch the buttery soft and fluffy Hikoo Caribou yarn and your mind starts to scream "Teddy Bear!!!"  Designer CiD Hanscom agrees, and the moment she got her hands on Caribou she started thinking of patterns for cute, huggable critters!  Using one strand each of HiKoo's Caribou and Simplicity (for added body), CiD has created Caribou Critters in three adorable patterns: a cheeky monkey, a playful puppy and a "hug him tight" teddy bear.

Caribou is a novelty yarn you have to touch to believe.  It's a super bulky yarn that is light and feathery soft. It comes in neutral tones and fun pastel colors!
The feathery soft Caribou yarn!
Simplicity is one of our most popular yarns - a buttery soft, superwash wool blend, and we've got over 60 colors to choose from!  Your friends at Ravelry have posted over 1,000 projects made with Simplicity!

Bonus:  We've got Simplicity on sale at 20% off!

The combination of Caribou and Simplicity results in a furry friend that is completely washable.  I didn't realize how important this was until our team member Suzy (the Shepherdess) had "Baby Number Two".  That kid was a barfer!  He puked more in his first three months of life than most people do in their entire life.  Suzy  was constantly doing laundry!  Some of his toys were ruined, but his Caribou Critters could be thrown in the washing machine with the rest of his nasty clothes, and came out smelling like a rose and ready for more hugging!

So which Caribou Critter do you want to knit first?

It's I Love Yarn Day - Enjoy FREE Shipping & a FREE Pattern!

I Love Yarn Day is this Friday!  Ok, so I love yarn everyday, but the Craft Yarn Council invites all yarn lovers to unite on the second Friday of each October (that's October 11th this year) to celebrate our love of yarn!

Vail Hand Dyed in Pink
Because we know you love yarn as much as we do, we'd like to celebrate I Love Yarn Day with a gift to you!  On October 11th we are offering free shipping on any order that includes Classic Elite's Vail or Vail Hand Dyed yarn when you use the coupon code: LOVEYARN2013.

Vail is a wonderfully luxurious alpaca and bamboo blend in natural, undyed colors. The bamboo gives it a bit of luster and drape, while the alpaca gives it buttery softness.  Vail Hand Dyed is the same awesome yarn dyed in rich, vibrant colors and only available for a limited time.  Both yarns are perfect for shawls, scarfs and other accessories! Bonus: we are also going to give you a free copy of the Classic Elite Ashland Scarf pattern with the purchase of Vail Hand Dyed yarn on Friday!

Rowan's Birthday Sale!

Big Scout, Little Rowan
Rowan is one year old!  Not the yarn manufacturer, our kitten!  So to celebrate we are putting all Rowan yarns and patterns on sale at 20% off!  The kitten, however, is not for sale!

Rowan (the kitten)
Rowan thundered into our life last November.  We think he was five or six weeks old, so we think his birthday is sometime in October.  Because kittens need so much care, he started out living at the store ... and our customers loved him.  We hosted a survey on our Ravelry site and on our facebook page to name him, and "Rowan" was the winner!  Our intention was to see him through his kitten-hood, and then adopt him out to another family.  Well it's one year later, and he is prowling around the house ... Rowan is here to stay!
Angora Haze in Embrace

So what does Rowan's Rowan Birthday Sale sale entail?  Everything!  Over 30 Rowan yarns - all in a wide variety of colors - plus over 20 pattern books!

Some of my favorites, new for fall:
  • Angora Haze is blissfully soft with a wonderful halo - just like our little kitty Rowan!  But unlike Rowan the Cat, Angora Haze comes in 13 colors from pretty pastels to bold jewel tones.  Knit yourself a hat and you will have a halo, too!
  • Thick 'n' Thin yarn is just like the name says...thick and thin! This super bulky, basic wool yarn will add unique texture and interest to any project, whether is a cozy winter cardigan or quick and stylish cowl and hat. Psst - are you looking for quick Christmas project yarn?
  •  Kidsilk Haze Eclipse is a fuzzy mohair and silk yarn plied with a thin metallic
    Fine Art in Tawny
thread to add just a touch of sparkle.  Use Kidsilk Haze Eclipse to create a heavenly sweater or a luxury shawl... either way you will feel like you are wrapping yourself in a cloud!
  • Fine Art is Rowan's first sock yarn! Soft and durable, this yarn is dyed in rich, beautiful colors by Cape Mohair Spinners, a company that helps empower individuals from some of the poorest communities of South Africa. This beautiful mix of fiber and color make Fine Art a wonderful choice for beautiful socks, exquisite shawls, and other accessories!
  • Grouchy Rowan
  • Alpaca Colour is made from cozy, soft 100% baby alpaca. This single ply yarn comes in a wonderful array of tonal colors, and is great for patterns that show off textured stitches. Alpaca Colour is perfect for any soft garment next to your skin, whether it is a wonderfully warm sweater, a cuddly cowl, or snugly scarf!
And don't forget the pattern books!
All Season Chunky Collection
  • Rowan Magazine 54 is their 54th pattern book - yea, they know what they are doing!  This almost 200-pager includes beautiful designs in lace, bobbles, cables, and color work!
  • Like socks?  Fine Art Collection includes 10 sock patterns and 4 accessories, all using Fine Art yarn.  The 72 page book also includes a How to Knit Socks guide!
  • All Season Chunky yarn is fun, fabulous - and fast!  The All Season Chunky Collection book has 12 designs for simple to knit, relaxed and textured tops and dresses.
So grab some Rowan yarn - and a slice of birthday cake! Happy Knitting . . . . Amy
