Stone Path Sock - FREE Pattern with Serenity 20 or Serenity Glitter Yarn!

Got stones in your socks?  Nobody likes that.  But stones on your socks?  Now that's cool!

My favorite features in a Zen garden are always the rocks and sand.  The stoic rocks and the changing sand speak of both movement and stillness.  So with that in mind, I created the Stone Path Sock pattern.  The furrows and stones across the top of the foot and angled flutes along the sides will stir images of wandering (in your socks) through a quiet stone garden.

Stone Path Sock Pattern
Knit from the toe up, the Stone Path Sock foot features a rib pattern flanked by lace.  The leg transitions the rib into a pathway which gently flows around simple stone motifs.  Two sizes are provided based on foot circumference using slightly different needle sizes.

The pattern is written for two circular needles, but more experienced knitters will feel confident using other methods. There's nothing in the pattern itself that requires the two circs method.

The socks can be knit in Zen Yarn Garden's Serenity 20 or Serenity GlitterSerenity 20 is a soft and squishy wool blend with a nice helping of cashmere to make it sinfully soft against your skin, plus a little bit of nylon to add durability.  Serenity Glitter is cozy and soft with a dollop of cashmere to add a little decadence and a surprisingly soft shimmer of sparkling nylon that adds glitter and durability to your garment.

Bonus:  The Stone Path Sock pattern is FREE with the purchase of any quantity of Serenity 20 or Serenity Glitter!

Double Bonus:  Both Serenity 20 and Serenity Glitter are on sale at 20% off thru this Sunday, February 1st!

So when you're tired of walking on the wild side, put on your Stone Path Socks for a gentle stroll through a tranquil garden.

Limited Edition Color for the Spring KAL!

Spring is here!  Well . . . not really.  But it is time to start thinking about the spring Knit-Along with Michelle Hunter starting on April 2nd!

"Let's Make a Teal"
The April Knit-Along is a pair of stylish socks called Kaika and the pattern will be available in three women's sizes (small, medium and large).  So what do the socks look like?  We don't know - that's the fun part of a mystery knit along!  We do know that the Kaika socks are knit from the toe-up and feature Japanese stitches.  "Kaika" is the name of an early Japanese emperor who ruled from about 150 BC to around 100 BC, and he liked to wear teal socks.  Ok, so nobody really knows what his favorite color was, but it's a good tie-in to the Japanese stitches!

Emperor Kaika
And the yarn?  Now that's the best part.  The socks feature a limited edition yarn color dyed by Seattle area hand-dyer, Schmutzerella. The yarn color, dubbed "Let's Make a Teal!" is to-die-for-gorgeous in Wolkenspeil base yarn, an 80% Extra Fine Superwash Merino Wool and 20% Nylon yarn.  There is a limited supply of the new color, and when it's gone, it's gone!

Never done a KAL?  It's easy ... Michelle will reveal the pattern on her website in four segments, starting on Thursday, April 2nd.  How much does it cost?  Nothing!  You don't have to register or pay any fee to participate. You may even win some cool prizes from Skacel.  Have a question?  No problem, Michelle posts photos and online video instructions, plus you can post questions on Michelle's KAL site or in her Ravelry group. Questions are typically answered daily.  It's like having a knitting tutor right by your side!  And it's OK to get video help at 3 am - perhaps your grandmother isn't so accommodating!

So how do you start?
    Pick Your Yarn Color
    Wolkenspiel in Autumn Mood
I'm going to use Schmutzerella's limited edition yarn color "Let's Make a Teal!" in Wolkensiel.

Don't like teal?  Wouldn't the world be a boring place if everyone had the same favorite color?  You don't have to use teal, the Wolkenspiel yarn is available in seven other stunning colors as well.  Pick your favorite!

    Check Your Needles
The recommended needles are size US 1 (2.5 mm) double pointed needles or size US 1 (2.5 mm) 32″ circulars if you prefer "The Magic Loop" method. If you don't have a set we love the addi circulars!

    Pick Your Pins
You will also need a handful of ordinary safety pins or locking stitch markers depending on the size socks you are knitting; the small size needs 18 pins, the medium 22 pins, and the large 24 pins.

Canyon & Mammoth - Two New Bulky Yarns!

    Canyon in Desert Oasis
It's January and windy and snowing and I'm cold.  I'm really cold!  No time to lollygag around knitting a delicate little lace weight project, it's time for warm, instant gratification projects that you can knit over the weekend and wear on Monday!

So I am thrilled with the timing of Dream in Color's two new yarns, Canyon and Mammoth.  Both are bulky weight yarns of 100% extra fine wool yarn that is grown, spun and hand dyed in the USA.  "Extra fine" refers to the diameter of each individual strand of wool hair - the thinner the fiber, the softer the wool.  Extra fine wool has the famous warmth of wool with the softness of a luxury fiber.

    Mammoth in Goblin Valley
Both Canyon and Mammoth are available in over 20 hand dyed in-stock colors.  Both yarns are bulky, they come in the same colors, and they are even the same price.

So what's the difference?  Mammoth is a bulkier bulky.  Canyon's gauge is 14 stitches for a 4.0 inch swatch and a recommend needed size of 9 or 10 US.  Mammoth's gauge is 12 stitches for a 4.0 inch swatch and the recommended needle size is 11.

So choose your bulkiness - and start knitting some quick, warm winter gear!
    Keep Warm!

Double Diamond Shawl Pattern FREE with Serenity Silk + Yarn

If diamonds are a girl's best friend, then the Double Diamond Shawl is a girl's BFF!

The Double Diamond Shawl is a simple and elegant design that incorporates small central-edge and bottom-edge lace panels to make an approachable pattern look masterful.  The shape is roughly triangular and uses just one skein of Serenity Silk +So how do you get the pattern?  It's FREE with the purchase Serenity Silk + yarn!

Zen Yarn Garden's Serenity Silk + is a two-ply blend of superwash merino wool, cashmere, and silk that offers stunning stitch definition in a soft, luxurious fabric. The wool provides a nice basic structure, the cashmere offers a little decadent softness, and the silk adds to the drape and sheen of this fingering-weight yarn that's beautifully hand-dyed.  We have 13 gorgeous colors in stock, but if that's not enough we also have 90 special order colors available!

Bonus:  All Zen Yarn Garden yarns are on sale at 20% off until February 2nd!  The sale includes both in-stock and special order colors!

The body of the shawl is knit on 40″ circular needles, though long straight needles would do if you're uncomfortable on circulars. The shawl is finished with a very simple crochet trim bind off. Even if you're a novice crocheter, you will have no trouble with this easy edging.

You will need one 40″ size US 6 / 4.0 mm and one size US 5 / 3.75 mm circular needle. I like the addi Turbos, and I also suggest the addi Rockets if you like a sharper point. Adjust the needle size to obtain gauge if necessary, and no, the length isn't important on the smaller needle. You'll also need a US C / 3.0 mm crochet hook for the crocheted bind-off and edging. Don't worry!  If you have even the most basic crochet skills, you should be fine. I highly recommend the addi Swing Crochet Hook for a nice comfortable grip or the more traditional and affordable addi Color Coded Crochet Hook; both have the same nickel-plated surface as addi Turbo knitting needles. And a couple of stitch markers would definitely be handy!

Wrap yourself  in the luxury of diamonds and silk!

    Flipping Out Over addi FlipStix

    addi FlipStix
Do you prefer addi's regular classic Turbo tips or the longer, pointier lace tips?  Well, now you don't have to choose.  The new addi FlipStix have both tips!

I've been using the FlipStix for hats, mittens and socks.  I use the Turbo tip for most of the knitting, then switch to the lace tip end for the top of the hat, the point of the mitten, and the sock toe.  The lace tip works great for knitting into those tight K2tog stitches when you're doing a lot of decreases, and it's nice to just flip the needle around instead of digging through the bottom of my work bag looking for a new set of needles.

Each FipStix set includes five anodized aluminum needles in fun, vibrant colors.  The brightly colored needles are easy to find in your project bag.  I also discovered that using different colored needles makes it easier for first-timers to learn knitting in the round.   Newbies always complain that there's just too many needles, and with different colored needles it's easier to tell your brain to concentrate on just two needles and ignore the others.

It's always fun to try new things, but it's even more fun when they're on sale!  We've got the addi FlipSix on sale for 20% off!  Give them a try and you'll flip, too!
