Storey Time! - Join Martin Storey's New KAL

Martin Storey KAL
It's Storey time!  And I don't mean the cookies and milk kind of story time, I mean it's time for another great knit along with veteran designer Martin Storey!

This is Martin Storey's second knit along featuring Rowan Pure Wool Superwash Worsted, and this time he has created an amazing eight color afghan.

Martin Storey afghan in Blues Colorway
Pure Wool Superwash Worsted is a practical, everyday wool that offers the quality and durability of the Rowan brand in a simple easy-care wool at a remarkably fair price. But with over 50 colors of Pure Wool Superwash Worsted to choose from, how will you narrow it down to eight colors?  More importantly - pick eight colors that blend well together?  No problem!  Martin has used his keen eye to select four classic tonal palettes designed to fit in with the most popular interior color schemes.  Choose from the Blues, Evergreen, Spice or Calm colorways. You can rest assured that your colors will look terrific together and we've even put them in nifty, easy to shop kits!

This KAL was designed with the beginner knitter in mind, but it expands on the techniques of Martin's first KAL. In this blanket, the knitter will start to create recognizable motifs in both one and two color squares, delicate motifs in simple textures, and lace.  The gorgeous designs were influenced by knitted textures and Fair Isle patterns from the Shetland and Faeroe Islands as well as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland.  For the more adventurous among us, he's even offered a further option to introduce beginner knitters to a simple bead knitting technique.

The afghan is knit in squares, so the project travels well and can be knit away from home (not always easy to do with a large project!).  Eight different squares are each knit six times for a total of 48 squares.  Starting January 28th, two square patterns are released each month on Ravelry with the final project close on May 26th.  It's a nice project to work on through the cold winter months - and you'll be done and ready for smaller projects in time for summer!

Our KAL kits are discounted 25% off from the regular price of the Pure Wool Superwash Worsted yarn - plus get free shipping in the US and Canada!

So leave the cookies and milk behind, grab your knitting needles (and some wine and crackers!) and get ready for some grown-up Storey Time!

Happy Knitting . . . . Amy

Stockroom Sale - Great End of Year Prices!

Stockroom Sale - Now through January 3rd!
An end-of-the-year sale is often called a "White Sale."  The tradition dates back to the late 19th century when retailers highlighted household linens, and since in those days household linens such as bed sheets, towels, cloth napkins and table cloths were always white, calling it a White Sale was appropriate.

Our sale includes white yarn but also an amazing rainbow of brilliant colors!  So instead of calling it a "White, Blue, Yellow, Green, Red, Purple and Orange Sale," we are simply calling it our Stockroom Sale.

Perfectly Posh Sport in Dream On
Did you get money for the holidays?  Our Stockroom Sale includes tons of yarn!  All sale yarns are at least 20% off, and clearance items are 25% to 40% off to give you more bang for your holiday bucks.  Visit our "Sales" Page to see the entire list, but here are a few of my favorites:
  • Dream in Color's Perfectly Posh Sport has been a favorite of mine, but it's been discontinued (boo hoo!), so we've got it on sale at 40% off.  It's a unique blend of velvety cashmere, soft baby fine mohair, luxurious silk, and cozy merino wool. What ever you create with this sport weight yarn will be perfectly posh!
  • Classic Elite's Toboggan is soft and warm enough to wear while sledding through the snow on your toboggan!  This super bulky blend of merino wool and superfine alpaca is a terrific 30% off!
  • A slightly heavier version of Dream in Color's Everlasting Sock yarn, Everlasting Sock Heavy is a limited edition yarn available only at FiberWild!  This 100% superwash Australian wool yarn is 30% off - and includes a free sock pattern!
  • Rowan's Pure Linen is,
    Silkystones in Dell
well, pure linen.  This 100% linen with an easy feel and airy drape is great for summer garments - and it's 30% off!
  • Rowan's Silkystones is a uniquely textured worsted weight yarn that combines Toussah silk with linen.  A soft yarn with a bit of drape, Silkystones is great for a summer tank or a lightweight pullover - and it's 30% off!
  • Rowan's Fine Art Aran combines all of the favorites - merino wool, kid mohair, superfine alpaca and mulberry silk.  This medium weight yarn is uniquely hand painted in wonderful colors - great for a funky hat or a cozy cowl!  And it's 40% off!
  • If it's called Tiffany it's gotta have some bling!  Filatura Di Crosa's Tiffany is a cotton and viscose blend with a bit of tweed and a bit of metallic.  Give your garments some personality - and it's 40% off!
Tiffany in Amber
Wrap up your year with some new yarn at amazing prices for your New Year's projects!  This sale ends Sunday, January 3rd.

When Time Is Small the Stitches Get BIG - Montana Big!

    Action Cowl in Big Montana
When the time gets small the stitches get big.  Like really big.  I mean Montana big, as in the super bulky Tahki Montana and it's even bulkier big brother, Big Montana.

Both of the Montanas are eco friendly yarns made of 100% unprocessed wool roving. The natural colors come from the natural color of the sheep. They feel soft and lofty - and knit up fast!  Just how fast?  Montana knits up at 10 stitches over 4″ on a US 13 and Big Montana knits 7 stitches over 4″ on a US 17.

Check out these great (and quick!) patterns:
    • The Espirit Hat & Scarf pairs the bulky Big Montana and Tahki Zona, a much thinner yarn that is light-weight and airy.  Alternating the two yarns adds texture and interest to a simple (and easy!) hat and scarf.
    • The Great Outdoors Scarf also pairs Big Montana with Zona.  The scarf is a simple ribbed pattern, but the two yarn textures give the impression of giant baubles.  Easy to knit - fun to wear!
    • The Abbey Cowl has been a classic favorite for years!  Snuggle down into a short cowl that uses fair isle colorwork to highlight the natural colors of the Montana yarn.
    • Espirit Hat & Scarf
    • The Action Cowl, for when you're feeling the need for speed!   The Action Cowl is a  simple garter drop stitch pattern in Big Montana.  Instant gratification!
    Great Outdoors Scarf
Great for car knitting (amusing someone else is driving, of course!), and depending on just how far over the river and through the woods your grandmother lives, you just might start your trip with a bag full of yarn and arrive with a completed gift!

Simple and Sweet: The Little Flowers Cowl

More and more, folks - women, men, and even kids - are wearing simple cowls instead of more traditional scarves, and it's easy to see why. They don't blow off or get caught in things, they can be very easy to make, and they don't take a ton of yarn to knit.  It's the perfect gift for someone else . . . or a personal treasure just for yourself!

    Little Flowers Cowl
Our new Little Flowers Cowl is certainly cute!  It's little and it's got flowers.  What else do you need to know?   With the simplest rolled Stockinette stitch edging, this basic repeating “lace” stitch fabric is an ideal weekend knit for even the newest knitter.  Pop in your favorite holiday DVD, warm up a cup of hot chocolate, and get knittin'!

The Little Flowers Cowl is knit with the gorgeous hand-dyed Malabrigo Finito.  Merino wool is the softest wool available anyway, but Malabrigo raises the bar by using only 100% superfine merino.  It just doesn't get any softer!

Malabrigo is a yarn supplier from Uruguay, where Spanish is the main language, and Finito is Spanish for finite, as in "limited."  It's a fitting name for the yarn, because there is only a limited amount of the finest superfine merino wool to be had each year.

    Little Flowers Cowl
Your fingers will love working with the softness of Finito.  Finito is hand-dyed in twelve rich colors.  If  you can't decide which color to choose for your Little Flowers Cowl, you'll just have to knit two or three of them!

Bonus:  The Little Flowers Cowl pattern is free with the purchase of Malabrigo Finito yarn!

Double Bonus: We've got Malabrigo Finito yarn on sale at 20% off!

January KAL - The Ambiguous Cowl

    Get ready for January knitting!
Right now I know you are frantically working on your holiday knitting projects - both gifts to give and for you to wear!  But what are you going to knit in January?  Have you thought that far ahead yet?

Well, now is the perfect time to order your yarn for Michelle Hunter's next Knit A Long, the Ambiguous Cowl.  Since this is a mystery knit along, we don't have photos or a lot of details on the project other than that it's a reversible stranded colorwork cowl. If you've not done stranded colorwork (sometimes referred to as Fair Isle knitting*), this is an ideal project on which to learn since Michelle offers great tutorials via her blog and video tutorials.

    Sueno Tonal in Manatee Tonal
    So how does it work?
It's easy ... Michelle will reveal the pattern on her website in four segments, starting on Thursday, January 7, 2016.  How much does it cost?  Nothing!  You don't have to register or pay any fee to participate.  Have a question?  No problem, Michelle posts photos and online video instructions, plus you can post questions on Michelle's KAL site or in her Ravelry group. Questions are typically answered daily.  It's like having a knitting tutor right by your side!  And it's OK to get video help at 3 am - perhaps your grandmother isn't so accommodating!

The yarn Michelle used is HiKoo's new Sueño. This soft and luxurious yarn is a blend of superwash merino and bamboo viscose (rayon made from highly renewable bamboo). It results in a gorgeous, drapey fabric with wonderfully soft hand-feel and a slight luster that makes even casual garments and simple accessories look rich and luxurious.

    Sueno in Mud Puddle
Sueño is available in 39 gorgeous solid colors, and Sueño Tonal is the same yarn in 15 fun tonal colors (it has the highlights and shadows of kettle-dyed yarn so it's not quite solid but not quite variegated).  All those choices will make your color selection a difficult choice, so we've put together some color suggestions at the bottom of our KAL page.  Note that the geometric design is not the pattern (we don't know what the pattern looks like!), but it will help you to visualize the two colors mixed together.

Did you go a little over your budget with your holiday shopping?  (I did!)  We're here to help you out - we've got Sueño and Sueño Tonal on sale at 20% off!

*Geek Out:  "Fair Isle" knitting specifically refers to techniques and patterns developed in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland, including the tiny island of Fair Isle.  "Stranded colorwork" is a more general term for such techniques developed around the world.  So a true knitting nerd will call this cowl stranded colorwork and not Fair Isle, although many people use the two terms interchangeably.

The Non-Knitters Guide to Shopping for a Knitter

Don't knit, but want to buy for a knitter?  It's not enough that yarn comes in different colors, it also comes in different fibers and weights, and the needles need to match too.

So what's a non-knitter to do?  We've made it easy to get some perfect gifts for knitters and crocheters with the great ideas on our Holiday Gifts page.  Just pass the links (or this blog) along to those who may be shopping for you.  We suggest you prod them with a gentle little reminder, such as "HEY!!!  Look here for some great gift ideas for me! Hint, Hint, Hint!"

We've broken our suggestions down into easy categories:
    • Shawl Pins & Closures -
Addi Art 24K - Yup, it's real gold.
Not sure if she is a knitter or crocheter?  Doesn't matter.  Every fiber artist can use some shawl pins and closures.  In fact, shawl pins and closures are great for anyone who wears shawls, whether they make them or buy them.
    • Tools & Gizmos - Every occupation has its tools, and knitting is no different.  From instructional books to blocking tools, needle cases, knitting bags and more, knitting can be as simple or as advanced as you choose.
    • Needle & Hook Sets - Simply put, you just can't knit or crochet without 'em!
    • Gifts by Price - Sometimes it's just easier to scroll through the options by price.  We've got Gifts over $100, Gifts Under $10, and everything in-between.
    • Kits to Make or Give - Kits include the yarn and pattern in one neat package - easy to give as a kit or make and give as a completed project!
    • Novelty Items -
      Knitting Gauge - Under $5
Some are elegant and sophisticated, some are silly and cute, but they're all novelty items.
    • Stocking Stuffers - Need just a few small things to stuff in the stocking?  Here they are.
    • Gift Yarn - The sort of luxury yarn you may not buy for yourself - but it's very nice to receive as a gift!
    • Greeting Cards - Handmade cards send warm thoughts to fiber artists!  Do you see the scissors, crochet hooks, stitch markers, and other notions hidden in the "Stitchmas" tree?
We offer free shipping on orders over $75, but you also have the option to use a faster delivery service if necessary.  Don't forget to check out shipping deadlines on our website!

    Gift Certificates
Get your knitter a Gift Certificate, always the right size and color! Procrastinators rest easy . . . e-mail Gift Certificates can be ordered up until noon on Christmas Eve and still arrive in time for Christmas!

December Dream Club - The New Deadwood Cowl

MEMBERS ONLY!  Just kidding!  Everyone is welcome in Dream in Color Dream Club!

Here's how it works:  The gals at Dream in Color pick one of their favorite yarns and dye it an exclusive color that is available only in the Dream Club kit, then pair up the new color with a new pattern.  Once the limited edition color is gone - it's gone!

    Deadwood Cowl
December's color is a mix of grass green, gray blue, and grey.  The kit also includes a skein in Old Pueblo (a regular color), a soothing, mellow gray.  Both yarns are Canyon, a 100% extra fine wool yarn in a wonderful aran weight that is grown, spun, and hand dyed in the USA!

The pattern is the "Deadwood Cowl," a cozy cowl designed by Mercedes Tarasovich-Clark.  The unique design creates a colorful reversible fabric that features two color brioche ribbing.  The cowl uses simple centered increases to shape a stylish bandana point.  It's a great project for an introduction to brioche knitting, and perfect to keep you warm with the winter winds to come!

This cowl would make a great holiday gift for someone special - or a well-deserved treat for yourself for getting all of your holiday knitting done!

    Deadwood Cowl
Psst!  Most of our past Dream Club projects have sold out, but there are a scant few still left.  Check them out, and get 'em before they're gone!

    Happy Knitting . . . . Amy

Like the "Members Only" sign above?  You can get this sign, and a bunch of others, at My Security Sign.  And if you need a giggle (or just a smirk), be sure to check out their "Funny Beware of Dog Sign" category.  Who knew there were so many different signs available asking you to pick up your dog poop?

Plant Your Feet in Terra Firma Socks

If you love the look of cables, but don't like the fuss of knitting lots of cables, then you'll love the new Terra Firma Socks, the newest sock in our Sock of the Month Club!

Two broad mirrored faux cables run up the top and front of the sock on both sides of a tiny (and easy!) 2 × 2 cable.   As dramatic as these socks look, they're actually quite an approachable project because the two broad cables aren't actually cables at all, but an ingenious increase/decrease pattern, and the single central real cable is a simple 2 × 2 twist.

    Terra Firma Sock Leg Detail
At the same time there's also some interesting construction going on underneath. You get the full traditional gusset worked from the toe-up, a straight-forward turned heel, and the simple reinforcing slip-rib heel back. Up the back of the leg is a forgiving (and infinitely wearable) 2 × 2 rib.

The Terra Firma Sock is knit in the lustrous new Sueño yarn from HiKoo.  This soft and luxurious yarn is a blend of superwash merino and bamboo viscose (rayon made from highly renewable bamboo).

Do you prefer the 40 gorgeous Sueño solid colors or the 15 new Sueño Tonal colorsIt doesn't matter, because the Terra Firma Sock pattern is free with the purchase of either one!

Sueño is typically knit at sport-to-worsted gauge, but why follow the rules?  By using smaller gauge needles I've found that Sueño yields a deliciously squishy sock fabric that you'll love to wear!

Keep your feet planted firmly on the ground with the new Terra Firma Socks!

    Save 20% on Malibrigo Yarns!

    The Malabrigo Merinos
For the month of December we have all of our Malabrigo yarns on sale at 20% off!

Malabrigo (pronounced maul a-bree go) started when two brothers-in-law in Uruguay began dying yarn in the kitchen in 2005.  Their colors were popular, and they started selling to yarn shops in the U.S., then expanded to Europe.  They soon outgrew their kitchen and started a mill in nearby Montevideo.

Malabrigo strives to be as green a possible in their business.  They have their own flock of merino sheep, and as they have grown they also purchase wool ... but only from Uruguayan farmers who allow their sheep to live free-range through the hills and are herded by actual old-fashioned shepherds.  Once the wool is brought to the mill, it is dyed using solar-powered water heaters.  Their Superwash manufacturing process meets Oeko-Tex standards, which means their yarn is free from harmful substances often found in manufacturing.  Their employees are mostly women, who often have few employment opportunities in Uruguay.

    Mechita in English Rose
All of our in-stock Malabrigo yarns are on sale - that's 10 different yarns and a gorgeous array of colors for each one!  It's impossible to narrow it down to my number-one favorite, but here are my top three:
    • Silkpaca - You expect a South American yarn company to have alpaca, but Malabrigo takes their alpaca to the next level by using only the very softest baby alpaca - and then blending it with a bit of silk!  This lace weight natural yarn is so soft and silky you will feel like you are wearing a cloud!  It's thin, but sturdy, with a bit of a halo, too.
    • Mechita - This single ply 100% Superwash Merino is soft, rich and gorgeously colored!  It's a fingering weight yarn great for cables, lace and textured stitches.
    • Worsted - Malabrigo's Worsted yarn is just what you'd expect from the no-fuss name: an honest, no-nonsense workhorse of a yarn.  The durable, 100% Superwash Merino yarn works great with anything you wear - think hat, scarves and mittens!
    Silkpaca in Bobby Blue
Because all Malabrigo yarns are hand-dyed, be sure to get enough yarn to complete your project.  There is quite a bit of variation between the different lots. That's what makes hand-dyed yarn so unique - but it can also become frustrating when you're nearing the end of your skein before your project is complete!

Why the funny name?  Malabrigo  means "bad shelter."  There is a town named Mal Abrigo in Uruguay, but also a number of other towns with the same name throughout South America.  In the days of travel by horse or on foot, weary travelers needed a safe, warm place to stop for the night.  A Mal Abrigo is a place to stop where people  can sit by warm fires and knit cozy wool hats, sweaters, blankets and scarves!  Exactly the sort of place where I like to be!

    Crystal Tracery Cowl Ready-To-Sparkle Kits

The Shine Collection, combining Rowan's luxury yarns and Swarovski beads, is an impressive collection of patterns, yarns and beads.  With so many beautiful yarns and spectacular beads to choose from, I couldn't help but write a few patterns of my own!

The Crystal Tracery Cowl is a gorgeous pairing of the luxury of Rowan's Fine Art yarn with the beautiful sparkle of Shine Swarovski beads ... simply striking!  The beads add a bit of sparkle, and the easy drape of the Fine Art Yarn adds a visual softness.

    Crystal Tracery Cowl
This lovely beaded accessory is ideal for just a extra little something to cover your shoulders.  The Crystal Tracery Cowl is worked in the round from the center out.  It is pulled over the head to dress up and add some class to anything

The cowl is knit in Rowan's Fine Art yarn.  What makes Rowan Fine Art interesting (aside from the sumptuous colors!) is that the "animal fiber" in this yarn is a combination of wool and two other more durable natural fibers: mohair and silk. Although they are luxury fibers, mohair and silk are also two extremely durable natural knitting fibers - the best of both worlds!

And since the holidays are a time of giving, we should also point out that the rich, beautiful colors of Rowan's Fine Art yarn are dyed by a company that helps empower individuals from some of the poorest communities of South Africa.  When you give a gift knit in Rowan Fine Art you are also giving a gift to the dyers.

There are two ways to order the Crystal Tracery Cowl pattern:

    Crystal Tracery Cowl
    1.  We have put together kits in four different colorways.  Each convenient kit includes the yarn, beads, pattern PDF . . . even a bead needle!  We've done all the math for you, so you get the right amount of yarn and all the right amount of beads and all in the right size - all ready for you to start knitting!

    2.  For even more options, you can create your own kit by purchasing separately:
    • 1 skein of Rowan Fine Art yarn (You have 13 fabulous colors to choose from!)
    • 100 (1 package) of size 4 mm Shine Swarovski Beads (Choose from five brilliant colors!)
    • Pattern - Free with the purchase of your Rowan Fine Art yarn.  Be sure to request the pattern in the "comments" area when you order your yarn and we'll e-mail you the PDF.
Psst!  When you request the free pattern, we'll also include the bead needle you'll need when we ship out your yarn.
